Title: Importing AI Files
Post by Kevin Wallace on 20. Nov 2003 at 23:46
Adobe Illustrator is probably one of the most popular design and illustration programs in use today. SignGo can import AI files with ease so long as some simple rules are followed. Pass on the following information to any client that wants to send you data in AI format and you should receive cuttable data every time.

Ensure the following when saving from Illustrator:
  • In Illustrator convert text to outlines/paths/curves.
  • From File menu choose Save a copy. Name the file and give it a location. Click Save.
  • From the Options dialog, compatability list choose Illustrator 3 and click OK.

Thats it!

Illustrator CS2 and CS3 and  CS5 will not export to AI version 4  :(

For these programs use the save as and select legacy version 3

Select Save AS - Illustrator
Give it a name ;), Click Save then on the next dialog there is the option to change to a legacy format, select version 3 ( Not CS3 - that''s version 12 )

This is also the way to export eps

Remember from a MAC version of illustrator to put the PC extension .ai on the end of the file name ::)
